In connection with the European WEEE and RoHS Directives, Focon has started a number of activities aiming at se- curing conformity of Focon’s products with Directives 2002/95/EC (RoHS – restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment) and 2002/96/EC (WEEE – Waste Electrical and Electronic Equip- ment).

Although both directives – RoHS and WEEE – do not regulate railway applications, as railway applications are consid- ered to be outside the scope of both Directives, Focon has committed itself to carry on its business in an environ- mentally sound way and Focon is fully supporting the objective of the WEEE and RoHS Directives and endeavours to comply with these Directives.

“The opinion of the Commission is that excluded from the scope of the RoHS Directive is the equipment which part of another type of equipment that does not fall within the scope of this Directive. Therefore, equipment that is specifi- cally designed to be installed in airplanes, boats and other means of transport (including satellites) is considered to fall outside the scope of the RoHS Directive.”

(EUROPEAN COMMISSION – Frequently asked questions on Directive 2002/95/EC (RoHS) & 2002/96/EC (WEEE), page 5, ) Focon follows the guidelines made for the railway sector by UNIFE (The European Rail Industry).

Focon as a supplier shall be a secure and reliable choice to our customers. Focon therefore attaches great im- portance to our products complying with the requirements of the RoHS & WEEE Directives.

Focon’s definite target is to secure its customers highly reliable products and the possibility of disposing of worn-out products in an environmentally proper way. Focon is co-operating with Uniscrap A/S (ISO 14001 environmentally certified as well as EMAS approved) and Focon is thus able to offer disposal of worn-out products in an environmen- tally proper way.

We will consequently demand from our suppliers that they stop delivering products and components containing substances mentioned in the Directives. This means that hazardous substances will gradually be excluded from Focon’s products.

In practice this means that our customers, for a transitional period after the completion date, may see products not yet fully complying with the RoHS Directive.

Focon is of course at your disposal should you need further information. Best regards
